Westborough – The Rotary Club of Westborough is hosting its fourth annual Sprint Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 18, beginning at 8 a.m. at the former Westborough State Hospital property on Lyman Street. The event will be rain or shine.

Organizers expect more than 400 athletes at the triathlon this year and are seeking volunteers to monitor athletes along the route and at water stations. Volunteers are needed from 7 to 10:30 a.m. on the morning of the race.

“The bottom line is our volunteer requirement is greater than ever,” Bill Domings, triathlon committee member, said. “We simply must maintain a person at each critical turn and each water station for the comfort and safety of our athletes.  We seek individuals, families, friends, neighborhood groups and clubs to help the [event] be a success.”

The event includes a quarter-mile swim in Lake Chauncy, a 14-mile bike loop, and a three-mile run. New events for 2013 include the Off-road Triathlon, which substitutes a 5- to 6-mile trail bike course, and Splash and Dash, which eliminates the bike loop altogether. Proceeds benefit the Rotary Club and the American Diabetes Association. To register, visit www.sunmultisportevents.com/Westborough_Sprint.htm or westboroughrotary.org. To volunteer, contact Jim O’Connor at 508-868-4309 or jo72149@verizon.net.
