New cemetery under construction years from being opened

Westborough–Apparently, residents are dying to get into the town’s newest cemetery.

Selectmen Chair George Barrette said he and other officials have received a number of inquiries from Westborough residents interested in reserving plots in what will eventually be a new town cemetery on Route 30.

The land has been cleared of trees, using funds allocated by last October’s Town Meeting. More recently, a sign was erected at the property and Barrette said the activity appears to have sparked the interest.

But it will likely be several years before the town is in a position to begin selling plots in the burial ground.

“It’s too early. That cemetery is at least five to seven years away,” Barrette said. “There is still a lot of work to be done.”

Barrette credited Department of Public Works Director John Walden with careful stewardship of limited funds to spread the work on the cemetery out over several years.

“We’re working on it in small amounts, as we can afford it,” Barrette said, adding that a design plan is in place for the cemetery.

Other town cemeteries still have plenty of space, he added, adding that the new spot, located on Route 30 not far from the Grafton line, will “take care of us until none of us in this room or even our grandchildren really care anymore.”
