WESTBOROUGH – The Town of Westborough has moved to a level five water restriction.
This move means that outdoor lawn and garden watering is restricted at all times and on all days. Additionally, pool filling and car washing is prohibited.
Westborough has had a water restriction in place since May. Earlier this week, the restriction was raised to a level four, which prohibited outdoor lawn and garden watering with sprinklers and limited outdoor watering to hand-held hoses and watering cans.
Now, moving into a level five signals critical drought conditions.
Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Beth Card declared a level three critical drought in both the northeast and central regions of the state, which includes both Worcester and Middlesex counties.
“As the state endured high temperatures and little precipitation, now more than ever it is critical that we all practice water conservation methods across the commonwealth,” Card said in a press release Thursday. “Minimizing water use now, especially in areas like the Millers and Nashua River watersheds, will allow local water supply systems and natural habitats to rebound more quickly, and will also ensure water resources are available for essential needs, such as drinking water and fire protection.”
This move comes following a week of temperatures in the 90s.
Westborough is not the only community to take steps in light of the drought. Hudson instituted level five water restriction, which banned outdoor watering and prohibited the use of sprinklers and irrigation systems.
