WESTBOROUGH – A Westborough photographer is one of the winners of the National Wildlife Federation’s 50th annual National Wildlife Photo Contest.
Nancy Szostak Wright won first place in the portfolio category for her portfolio “Avoid Buzzkill: Capturing Bees and Wasps to Keep them Alive.”
The portfolio featured 10 photos of bees and wasps at three Massachusetts botanical gardens.
“I am beyond thrilled and so humbled by this honor,” Wright said in a press release announcing this award. “To learn I was a finalist, in the top 35 out of 40,000+ entries was mind-blowing. Then, to learn I won the inaugural portfolio category that had almost 400 entries was simply amazing.”
Wright was one of 18 winners from six different countries and six different states.
During the pandemic, Wright said she wanted to be outside. She visited the Acton Arboretum for the first time and said she was mesmerized by the bees.
“I’m just hoping that this portfolio of bees and wasps will help others to look at bees differently, like I did,” Wright said. “There are other things we can do to help the bees and other pollinators — reduce pesticides and preserve wild habitat are two examples.”
