Westborough – Rising senior and Westborough’ girls varsity soccer team goalkeeper Carolyn Kelley lets us know what she enjoys most about living in Westborough, as well as some of her favorite moments on the soccer field.
What made you interested in starting to play goalkeeper on the team? When did you start?
“I started playing goalkeeper when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I remember we always had to switch off being goalkeeper for my town team at the time, and the first time I played I realized I was good at it, so I just kept playing goalkeeper more and more. For a few years, I played goalkeeper and field, but once I was about 12 or 13, I started playing it full time and just fell in love with the position.”
What do you most enjoy about playing soccer?
“For me, since I am a goalkeeper, my favorite part about playing soccer is just being able to save the game. The feeling after making a good save that keeps the other team from scoring is like no other. Also, just being able to make new friends and new memories while playing the sport I love is always fun.”
What is your favorite soccer-related memory?
“My favorite soccer -related memory was with my high school team, either when we beat Wachusett last year at Wachusett, or when we beat Algonquin in the playoffs at home in overtime. During both of those moments my team and I were just genuinely so happy that we had won. Even though I have so many soccer-related memories, these two stick out.”
What do you enjoy about living in Westborough?
“I enjoy the sense of community Westborough has. Whenever we have a big soccer game or a big event in town in general, I feel like somehow the whole town knows and is there to support us. I feel like because we have such a tight-knit community in Westborough, everyone is supportive of everyone else.”
Who do you most admire? Why?
“I most admire my mother. I know this sounds cliche and all, but I really do admire my mother in everything she has done. She has taught me pretty much everything I know in life, so I look up to her for guidance just in life in general.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“In my spare time, I obviously like to play soccer. I also play basketball, and I enjoy playing any other sport as well. Also, I enjoy just spending time with my friends and family whenever I can, as I have so much fun whenever I’m with them.”
What book or movie would you most recommend to a friend? Why?
“I would recommend the movie ‘Ratatouille,’ just because it was one of my favorite movies to watch when I was a kid and I still enjoy watching it now.”
You’re about to have the perfect weekend – what are your plans?
“If it’s warm out, like during summer, my plans would be to go to the beach with my friends and just have a nice day to ourselves. I would want to go out to lunch or an early dinner after being at the beach, then come home and just relax some more.”
What advice would you give a younger student-athlete?
“Some advice I would give to a younger student-athlete would be just to have fun. I know it sounds cliche, but if you don’t take the time to have fun with whatever sport you’re playing while you’re young, then you won’t have fun with it when you’re older. I would also tell them to keep working hard with everything they do, whether it’s school or sports. If you really want to be good at something, then you have to be willing to put in the work.”
